WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Catholic College Jubilee: WESTPORT. October 15. The. celebration of an important milestone in the religious and educational life of Westport was continued this morning at St. Canice’s Church when High Mass was held to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of St. Mary’s College. There was an extremely large congregation and an outstanding feature of the Mass was the singing, of the choir, drawn from present day students of St. Mary’s College. Rev. Father Phelan, P.P., Westport, was celebrant, Father (J'Meeghan, Ahaura, Deacon; Father Monaghan, Christchurch, sub-Deaeon, and Father Me-, Grath, Master of Ceremonies. Occupants of the Sanctuary were lather Kelly, Grevmouth; Fr Long, Westport. The sermon was preached by Rev. Fr. J. Cullen, S.M., Nelson Visiting Sisters from Reef ton and Granity were also present. A re-union of past and present pupils of the College was held in the afternoon at the grounds of the institution. The ceremonies weie brought to a close later, when Benediction was held in St. Caniee’s Chinch. Father Phelan was celebrant.

An Early Call: ■ The Fire Brigade, under Superintendent Daily, responded promptly to an early call to an outbreak which was discovered at Norris’ timber mill this morning. The conflagration, which originated in a sawdust heap, was expeditiously got under control before much damage was done. Five hundred and fifty feet of hose was quickly run out and with a 1251 b. water pressure any danger of a spread of the fire was averted.

Municipal Band: Mr J. Taylor was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Westport Municipal Band held last evening. It was decided that the Band nominate for tho selection hymn tost and quickstep competitions at Nelson in February, entries for which close at the end of this month. ’ The resignation of Mr Bentley as drum-major was accepted with regret, and a vote of appreciation for services rendered was recorded. Mr F. Stevens was appointed to the vacancy. The conductor's monthly report was received as satisfactory. Mr King, Masters Mara, Paul, Prout and Barton were accepted as members of the Band. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting. Warden’s Court:

The following applications were realt with by the Warden, Mr 11. Morgan, at. Westport yesterday: — John Pcmberth and Roland Chester for coal prospecting license and water race.—Granted. Addison’s Exploration Co. tor ordinary prospecting license. —Recommended for consent. Addison’s Flat Gold Mining Co., Ltd., surrender absolutely special sites. —Accepted from tuis date.

Labour Day Carnival: Mr Mayor, Mr J. Kilkenny, presided at a special meeting of the Labour Day Sports Committee held last evening. Those present were Messrs Champion,‘’O’Neill, Crowe, Gardiner. Spencer, Didsdale, Adank, Woodcock, McKeown Stevens, Hay-Mackenzie, Duncan and Mrs P. Ryan. A vote of sympathy was accorded Mr W. McEwan, Granity, on the illness of his mother. It. was decided to advise Mr Jaines, Christchurch, that there was no space available at the carnival for side-shows. The committee intended to promote a sacred concert for Sunday, 25th October, but owing to high cost of rental of a suitable hall, the project was abandoned. The secretary, Mr Ryan reported that additional nominations for the chopping and sawing events had come to hand and the total would compare more than favourably with last year's. Canvassers reported that the response to appeal for trophies, etc. by the business people was very liberal. The meeting was engaged for some time dealing with matters of a. routine character. The committee will meet on Sunday morning next at 10 o’clock at the Labour Rooms. Personal:

Mr A. S. Dalton, with Mrs Dalton, left this morning for Hawera, where he takes over, on transfer, the managership of the Commercial Bank. Shipping: The Karcpo and Titoki are due here this week-end and the Kaimai on Monday. The Waimea is in port. The Alexander sailed yesterday for G rey m o u t h.
