Racing Notes

Ben Btaggie: An interesting entrant for the C.J-C. Handicap is Ben Braggie, one of the best hacks seen out last season.

Vintage: . Vinlage has been engaged lor handicaj) events on the first two days of the Wellington meeting and for the Harcourt Stakes on the final day. IP has been off the scene since tuc last New Zealand Cup.

Caulfield CUP: The Caulfield Cup, first “leg’ of l a big spring double in Victoria., will be decided on Saturday. New Zealanders still in the ’field are Cuddle, >Sport'nir Blood (two top weights). Queen of Song, Gay Blonde, Golden Promise, Gay Circle, One Whetu, and Mala.

Australia’s Galilee: There will be a Galilee racing m Australia this season. The name’ has been claimed in South Australia toi a three-year-old filly by Eastern Monarch from' the Adelaide Cup winner Suzunu.

Meiboump Cup: . Ninety-nine horses remained. in the field for the Melbourne Cup offer the first acceptance day. New Zealanders included in the list arc Silver Ring, Cuddle, 'Sporting Blood, Gay IBlondc, Queen of Song. Gay Sheik, Egmont, Golden Promise, Gay Circle, Desert Chief. Fladie, Padishah, Jack Tar, Happy Landing, Mala, Limond Lad, Bengal Lancer and.’ Rob Roy. Named.:

The Lackham —C'lcasanta colt in S. J. Reid’s team at Trentham has been named Happy Heels and the Siegfried —Speechless filly Brunhildc. Useful Pair:

An interesting aspect of lhe Wel lington entries is the nomination of W. H. Maria’s Australian-bred pair, Velocipede find Triune, who have been catered for lhe handicap and sprint

events respectively on the second and third days. This suggests too that these horses will go on to Ricearton for the New Zealand Cup and Steward’s Handicap. Maria has travelled over most of the North Island to race h!s horses, but in making plans taking in Trentham and Riiccarton he is breaking new ground. Floodtide: Floodtide, the winner of the Mitehelson Cup is a. four-year-old bay gelding by Tidal from' Sicilian, and is owned by Mr. I). D'avis of Auckland and trained by R- J- Miller, at Takitr.ni. Floodtide is undoubtedly a fine .'layer and it. is surprising to see his name missing from the list of New Zealand Cup nominees. Paper Slipper: Paper Slipper was a street above the other three-year-olds in class at Dunedin last week, but he is doubtful us a Derby prospect. Return From Sydney: The New Zealand colt Sigurd, who could not be started at Bandwick because of developing a cold on the trip across, arrived home on the Awatea this week, lie never had a saddle on him while in Sydney, and though, he has recovered from his chill he h<as tightened up. His future programme j depends on his immediate progress. Accomplice: Accomplice, who made a vetry promising showing in the two-year-old parade at Trentham on Saturday, is a half-sister by Night Raid to Boti Tray the. only other offspring of the .Paper Money mare Endorse to have been trained yet. She is a big filly, but wel pull together and very forward She is being tlriained by Telford lor Airs. B. 11. Edkins, Siegmund:

Siegmund, a big disappointment so far, ran in the parade at Trentham on Saturdav as though he will shortly be doing better if entrusted to a strong rider. Support for Rob Roy:

Rob Roy. who had a runaway win in the Members’ Handicap at. Randwick last week has made rapid progress on the Melbourne Cup lists. This was due not only to his impressive form, but also to the strong straight out backing that was forthcoming. Rob Roy has only 7.0 is the Melbourne Cup If he wins the Victoria Derby Jie nil! have to carry weight-for-age —7.6. Talking remains .favourite tor the Melbourne Cup, but he is closely pressed bv 'Mala, whom he narrowly beat in the Derby. Silver Ring. Golden Promise, and Ro.v Roy are separated by only a few points. Masterton Riders:

Riders fo r Masterton include: I’. Burgess, Siegmund; S. Wilson, llnostration. Cricket. Nightloss, Ticket, Galleemore, Passion Flower, and Arrownilla; R. W. Savage. Shy and Gay Mulla; J. McCauley,' AVindward and Mother-in-Law; E. Burgess, Verden (if started); S. ■R. Farland, Korero. No rider has yet been engaged for Alight. Paper Slipper: 'Paper Slipper is the eighth winner of the Dunedin Guineas to have carried' the Clifford livery. Sir Charles previously won with Cricket Bat. Verden: Verden, though an mcceptor, is by no means a certain starter at the Masterton meeting. He was feeling his troublesome leg after his gallop at Trentham on Wednesday morning. Guarantee: Guarantee was always in a rear position in his race at Dunedin last week, but one southern critic believes he will not. require much more racing to come back to form. Cuddle : Despite her failures in Australia, Cuddle will probably be started on. a distance preparation when she arrives liome next week. T. R. George is eoulideut he can fit. the maro up again. Shy: Shy’s preparation for the New Zealand - Cup will probably include only a couple of actual races. He is to run to-day at Masteton, and then will race one day at the Wellington meeting. He will lie ridden each time by his C’up pilot, R. AV. Savage. Slippery: Slippery, jii acceptor for the Grandstand Handicap <at Mastertoil to-day, won the open seven on both days last Masterton System: Betting at Masterton to-day and tomorrow will lie under the old system, with two dividends in fields of five or more chances.

VICTORIAN DOUBLE. SUIPFORT FOR' GAY 'BLONDE After her success over Silver Ring in the Craven Plate at Randwiek last week Gay Blonde became all the rage for the Caulfield Cup, which will be decided next Saturday, and, in 'addition io being supported straight out, she was coupled' with many of the leading Melbourne Cup candidates, including Talking, Mala, Sporting Blood, and her stablemate Rogerio -Golden Promise retains his position as favourite for the race, and Desert Chief, after his success on the opening day at Caulfield last Saturday, would probably have become one of the first choices. Last Thursday the order of favouritism lb), the two Cups was: Caulfield Cup:' Golden Promise. Talking, Gay Blonde. Bustard. Donaster. Desert Chief. Gay Lover, Journal, Brittle Prattle. High Cross. Melbourne (Cup: Talking, Mala. Silver Ring. Golden Promise. Am'alia, Rob Roy. Sareherie,

ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT “Hopples” asks: (1) What mark was De Soto on before winning the August and National Handicaps at the Metropolitan T.C. August meeting, and how many seconds was he re-handicap-ped for each win—De Soto was off 12ycls in & 4.29 class, thus on a 4.28 mark, in the August Handicap. In the National Handl “p (4.28 class) De Soto was off 24yds, thus he was on a 4.36 mark, and'was therefore penalised 2-1 yards for his first success. The tact oi his being off 12 yards in the N.Z. Cup brings him back on to a 4.25 mark, and therefore makes the peualty only

12 yards. (2) What mark was Grand Mogul on before winning his only twomile race at the same meeting, and how many seconds was he penalised for his win? —Grand Mogul was on the limit in the King Edward Handicap (4.28 class), which he won.
