WRESTLING & BOXING

HOKITIKA CONTESTS. A wrestling and boxing tournament was held at the Princess Theatre. Hokitika on Tuesday night under the direction of the Spartan Athletic Club, of Greymouth. The programme of six bouts of wrestling and two bouts of boxing provided a lot of excitement, and Hokitika sporting fans had a most enjoyable evening, witnessing some ot the best amateur contests ever presented there. Contestants from Blackball, Runanga, Cobden. Greymonth, Kumara and Hokitika took part with enthusiasm in fast, willing bouts. The children were moved to cheers by a | special bout between Popeye (Peters) and Yo Yo (Quinlan),, the former’s win over the “Tiger Alan’’ being popular with the juveniles. A bout betwmen G. Burn -and M anttan was fast and clever, both boys showing they improved 100 per cent. A bout between Peters and McLean created a lot of amusement, when AleLean, -with his usual touch of showmanship, jolted Peters, who in turn pushed AlcLe-an out of the ring. This bout ended in a draw, no falls, with McLean wild and ferocious, through not being allowed to use rough tactics. A contest, Anderson v. Williams, ended in Anderson’s favour by one falllie was determined to get even with Williams. The best bout of the evening was a challenge between Quinlan and J. Harris, this being fast, hard and solid. Both showed that they are out on their own in their own class. The bout ended in a draw, with no falls. The evening was topped off b.v bout ot three rounds between Frank Bell (ex'N.Z. champion) and Ray Nichol (N.Z. heavyweight champion. Another contest was one between a boxer (J. Cox) amt a wrestler (Quinlan), ending in favour of the wrestler, as the boxer became helpless -when his opponent applied a hold. In introducing the contestants Air J. Stafford stated that the Club had kindly come down with a view to popularising boxing, and to introduce wrestling eontests. He wrns glad to see such a fine attendance. The whole programme was most successful and it is safe to say another similar one will attract a large number at Hokitika.
