For the second time within a fortnight, the Government seaplane from Hobsonville Base was utilised to convey a patient from the Great Barrier Island to hospital. To-day, George Medland, aged live, son of a settler, was brought to Auckland, suffering from appendicitis. The case being urgent, the seaplane landoil on Woitemata Harbour instead of Hobsonville, and was met by au ambulance at the wharf. WELLINGTON. October 13. The Tourist Department has been advised that applications by distressed New Zealanders to the Sydney office, for financial relief, have been phenomenal. The Commissioner in Sydney has no funds on which he can draw for the purpose, and he advises people not to proceed to Australia without possessing adequate resources. WELLINGTON, October 13.

Dissatisfaction at the City Council’s refusal to allow a reduction in the electricity charges to schools, was expressed by the Wellington School Committees and Educational Federation. The Chairman, in reporting on the failure of the deputation to the Council, advocated using gas until the Council made a reduction. The schools were Government buildings, he said, and the charges should correspond to the rate charged to pub lie, bodies and not commercial rates as at present. Another speaker said that the schools were not getting a. fair deal as many had installed electric urns to provide hot drinks for children. Members said it -was ridiculous for the Town Clerk to suggest the size of many lighting accounts was largely due to gatherings being held in schools at night. The schools even had to hire halls or theatres for such entertainments as the annual breakup eeremonv. TIMARU, October 12. About 12.50 a.m’., to-day, John Smith Innes, lessee of the Kirkliston run. Mackenzie Country, staggered to the door of a house near Streamlands suffering from severe head injuries. By the time the occupants were aroused Innes was in a state of collapse, and died shortly afterwards. His car was found along the road loading to Haldon station, where it had apparently struck a post and capsized. The driver was apparently alone when the accident occurred. AUCKLAND, October 13. Charred aud smoky air mail letters, which arrived at Auckland by the i Aorangi yesterday, brought evidence of the disastrous air liner fire, at Delhi., at the end of last month. Most of the mail was undamaged, ten 'bags out of twelve destined for New Zealand, being salvaged, but several hundred of people throughout New Zealand will receive letters with burnt and blackened edges, repaired somewhat by clerks in the chief post offices.
