(Our Own Correspondent.) Labour Day Sports: WESTPORT, October 13. The Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny) was in the chair at last evening’s meeting of the Hofland Memorial Sports Committee. Those present were:— Messrs W. Champion. A. Ridsdale, F. Gardiner. W. P. Jackson, T. Adank. \V. O’NW.Il 1 , B. Champion, W. 11. Woodcock. W. Crowe, P. Ryan and Mrs Ryan. Apologies for non-attend-anee were received from Messrs 11. McKeown, 11. Stevens and J. IlayMcKenzie. Thd secretary (Mr P. Ryan) read the I'ist of nominations for the chopping and sawing events, which were considered very satisfactory. Karamea and other districts, owing to the floods and the consequent disorganisation of telegraph and mail services, asked that the closing data for nominations be extended to Friday. l'6th inst. This was agreed to. Hon. P. C. Webb and Mr J. o 'Prien, M.P., advised that if at all pn-sible, they, with Hon. Semp'e and other Parl amcntarians. wouM visit Westport for the carnival. It wa-> decided to advise Miss Walton. Hokitika. that a 1! competitors partic-pat-iug in the dancing conte-fs (10 Io 11 years) were eligible to contest the open c.ompet’tion (under 16 veers'), and that trophies would be awarded winners of each section. Mrs Rvan reported that all arrangements for the Japanese ball' on Labour - night wcie complete,, and that a 21-pieee tea set would be awarded to the best set. A coninrftry conq'sting of Messrs O 'Gorman, Pv'dsdale, Crowe and Spencer was appointed to organise a sacred concert to be hold on Sunday even'ng. 05th inst.. at St. James’ Theatre. Messrs Menzies. McEwan. Keating A’lcn. Flaherty and Mclnency advised that they would act in the captie’tv of stewards Adv-’ce was received from Newman Bros, to the effect that n spec/a 1 motor service from Greymouth and other places returning a the same day, would be arranged. 'Earlv application for seating accomnrod.ait’on to Newman’s office is advised. The next mect’ng of the comm ttee will be held to-morrow (Wednesdav) evening, at the Labour Rooms, at 7.30. Buller Rugby Union: At a meeting of the Birier Rugby Union he'd last evening, it was <lec r ded to applv to the N.Z. Union for \ match w’th thi«, Springboks, it being held that a visit from an evoiteam to Buller was long overdue. Old Bovs Were dcc’nred winners ot the Albion Cup town section, and will meet Rangers ('Mi’lerton')., winners of the countrv section, in the concluding match 'of the season on V'etorm Square pn Saturday next, W'th Mr V. Goodall as referee.

Boxing Championship For Westport: It is good to learn that everything j s proceeding smoothly with arrangements for the big boxing contest be tween O’Brien and Jacobs. wh’ch takes place at Westport on Saturday. 24th Inst., and in which the middleweiight title w : ?l be involved. Both lads are training hard, and the Luit promises to be a real sizzler. Some sparkling amateur bouts will precede the clash, and the Association prom isos patrons a great night’s sport.

Coal Output-; The output iof coal from Bul.e.i mines for September was a« follows; Westport Coal Coy.. 11.680 tons 12 cwt; Westport-Stockton Co.. 9.561 t.on s ’ 7 cwt; co-operative parties. 4.724 tons 7 cwt; Westport Coal Co. (coke), 104 tons 13 cwt; total 26,070 tons 19 cwt. Of this amount, 25,560 tons 8 cwt were exported.

Health Stamp Campaign; The Mayor (Mr J. Kilkenny) presided a t a public meeting held last weirng to further the sa’e of stamps in the health campaign. Mr Smith (Postmaster) roivfewcd the objects of the fund, which were primarily to assist not only crippled children. but others who were recommended by local school authorities for treatment. Summep- camps would be held at Christmas or some suitable time during the summer, so as to give the ch'fdren the greatest benefit. The extra charge on the stamp of one penny wan in the semblance of a tax. but was no grrtit hard hip to anyone. Tt was decided that all present Im fiorm-ed into a committee with power to add. and to hold a meeting on Tuesday next at 7.30 p.m. A number of suggestions for the d spo«nl of stamps were gone into, but final decision -as) to the form of net vity to be undertaken was deferred. During the month 31 Moameits and 8 auxiliary sailers’:, representing 17,232 tons, entered the port, and 34 steamers and 8 auxiliary sailers, -representing 21.171 tons, left the port. Miss Harkness was appointed to represent the branch at the conference to be held in Christchurch' on Novcimber 4 and 5. Afrs Iloldgate and Miss Harkness were appointed to represent the society at .i meeting to be held by the Mayor (Mr J. Kdkenny) in connection With the health stamp campaign. It was' agreed to hold the next meeting on Friday, November 13. The nurse reported as follows': Number of visits to office, -adults 216. babies 205, pre-school children 44. total 465; visits to homes, old cases 84, new ea ; es 22; total 106. The report was adopted. The Secretary' was instructed to make preliminary arrangements i o ' warding hall, etc., in connection with the society’s annual ball. Shipping: The Canopus arrived in port last eve.-ning. The Kal’ingo sailed yesterday morning for Grey mouth. The Kwitcu sal’s to-night for Wellington. The Kaimai and Karepo are ’luc here this woek-end.
