(Our Own Correspondent.? Child’s Sad Death: WESTPOB-T, October 6. The Coroner. Mr E. R. Fox, held an inquest yesterday into the circumstances attending the death of William Henrv Moseley, the three-year-old sou of Mr and Mrs I. C. Moseley, of Waimangaroa. The mother of the boy, Mrs Adelaide Moseley, stated that when she visited a .neighbour's place about. 200 yards away, she left her three children in the house, and about five minutes elapsed when she was called by her husband, and on arrival, found her husband with the child h ' S arm’s. He appeared to be ump, face blue, eyes closed, frothing at the mouth and moaning. A ear was procured immediately and the child conveyed to Westport, but was of the opinion that the boy was dead when she got into the car with him. One of her children told her that diseased had stuck a stick in his mouth. She tried to.open his mouth, but the teeth were clenched. She had nothing in the house like the 3 rivet produced, as far as she knew. Idris 'Clifford Moseley, fatherofthe child, stated that one of his children told him about 5.30, that Sonny, deceased. had hurt himself. The three children were all in the house. He asked deceased what was the matter, and he could just whisper: “I can’t, speak.” He was struggling for breath. I. looked -down the child’s throat, but could see nothing. “I have had rivets in the house similar to the one produced.” stated witness. Dr. David Athol Arnott stated that the child was dead when examined by him. He gave an injection into the heart cavity, without result. Up til! then he could not diagnose the cause of death, and on the instructions of the Coroner, performed a post mortem examination. The child' was found to bo well nourished, and developed, and howed no signs of external violence. AH organs were healthy, except the lungs, which showed acute oedema. There was a large copper rivet firmly embedded in the larynx. with the shaft projecting downwards, between the vocal cords. Death was due to asphvxia from laryngeal obstruction, due to a copper rivet, the rivet acting ns a valve preventing inspration. Once the rivet was firmly embedded in the throat, death would occur in about a minute. A verdict in accordance with the medical testimony was returned, and the Court extended sympathy to the relatives of deceased.
