HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, September 21. Rain fell early to-day as well as last after a fine week-end. A gorse fire at. 2.45 p.m. yesterday at the foot of the Cemetery Hill across the railway line was responsible for the ringing of the firebell, but before the Firo Brigade arrived, followed by a large crowd, the fire had been extinguished. The m.v. Hokitika sailed with timber for Wellington yesterday. She leaves there on Wednesday for Hokitika. The Gael is due on Wednesday from Tarakohe, sailing next day for Bruce Bay. She will not go to Okuru until a later spring tide. The former Hokitika resident, Mr. Alec Sargison, was this morninng killed in the Murchison district. A tree slid upon him, knocking him upon some stones, and causing his death. He was about 70 years of age. and carried on business here as a jeweller until P.O years ago, when he went to Wellington to work at. his trade. He wtis also well known as a musician, both in the Town Band and in dance bands. He had latterly been working in a mining claim at Maggie. Creek, near Murchison for a time with Mr. John Hewer, formerly of this district. Deceased’s wife lives in Wellington, while of his family two sons met sudden deaths, one. when a lad being killed by a dray wheel rolling over him and some years ago another son (Remenvi) was electrocuted at the power station at Kanieri Forks. The Inter-Wanganui Dairy Coy’s, report a year's successful operations with a record output of just over 300 tons of butter. With the exception of 1312 boxes sold f.o.b. at a satisfactory price the Company’s export butter was consigned to the British market and resulted in much more satisfactory realisation than that of last year’s export, sales. The manager and staff are again to be commended on the work performed—the butter exported being HIO j»er cent, finest grade and secured the hi< r hest average grading points in the Dominion—94.B72. Local sales have increased in proportion to the increased output. The balance sheet provides, on the basis of finest grade, .for a payment, of ll:{d per pound butterfat received during the season ended June 30, 193 G. This is exclusive of the cost of cream collecting. Newmans Motors Ltd. took over Stewart and Haswell’s transport contract at the beginning of the season and gave efficient service. The directors anticipate a distinct advantage during the coming season, owing to the guaranteed price, although increased cost of production will nullify this advantage to an extent requiring a year's operation to define. The directors recommend that 3 per eent. interest be paid on capital. The retiring directors are Mr. Cl. E. Graham and Mr W. Searle junr., and the retiring auditor, Mr. Wild. All are eligible for reelection.
