West Coast Dredges LAST WEEK’S AVERAGE 44 ozs. Seven of the smaller types of New Zealand-owned dredges operating on the Wosr Coast last week secured a total recovery of 312 ozs. 14 dwts., or an average of 44 ozs. 7 dwts. Gillespie’s Beach again took pride of place w'th a return of 70 ozs. 18 dwts, whilst Mossy Creek, 66 ozs. 10 dwts.. and Argo, 65 ozs. were also in the first flight. Nemona secured fhe useful return of 49 ozs. 12 dwfs., but Okarito. Worksop and Maori Gully were 'well down in the list. Gillespie’s Beach Dredging Company annual report stales the gold returns during the year under review amounted to 1,699.3 ozs, of the valmof £13,592 4s 7d. Export duty of £1,0,60 18s 3d was paid to- the Government. Since June 30,. the gold returns have latgely increased, and augur well for the .future success of the c/aim. An. overhaul 'was conducted bv Mr Geo. Pettigrew, wh.o, at this time, superseded Mr Donald Sutherland a s dredge, manager. The work was very comprehensive, including new top and bottom tumbler, re-con-ditioning and strengthening the shaker and new plates in same, while the bulk of bearings and distribution boxes, races and other table accessories;. sparge pipes, etc., were renewed. Mr Pettigrew deserves considerable erdit for this «-ork. which was cost lv. Since June 6. the dredge has been running steadily. Transport to the claim has beet;, and, still ie, a difficult and expe>nsiv(k problem, and considerably affects- not on’y the running eo.otbut the expense and, worry during overhaul. The holders will be pleased to learn that, the Government has consented to- make <t road to the claim. The dirlectors have promised a contribution of £650, while- the WestfanT Countv Council is also (contributing £250. ’

The report expresses regret at the death of Mr. V. Smith, a director whom Mr. W. D. Lambert replaced; also the death of Mr John Williamson, a valuable employee of the Company since its inception. Mr J. Fowell, the former chairman of directors, is resigning from the board, as he is now resident in Auckland, and the directors propo—to nominate Mr J. M. Stewart to fill the vacancy. Shareholders appreciate the work of the West Coast director, Mr M, Sullivan, and his efforts in connection with the new road. The directors have congratulated Mr Geo. Pettigrey on his efforts and also thank the engineers and crew for their faithful service. As there are very few shareholders who hold the necessary qualification to act as directors, it. has been considered advisable to reduce this from 5000 shares (£250) to 3000 shares (£150) by special resloution, which will be submitted to the annual meeting.
