Buller Team —Problems to be Solved
WESTPORT, July 13. The main item on the week-end sporting agenda in Westport was the Rugby clash between Buller and Coast' - in the return game for the Bund e Cup. In view of the fact that Buller will he called upon shortly to defend the Seddon Shield against Marlborough, the match with Coast possessed a. measure of interest for followers'of rhe game beyond the* ordinary character. The (weather was perfect, and •he ground conditions conducive to open 1 footba 1 !. WiiJh the exception ot one alteration in the Buller side, the team was the same that administered a trouncing to Coast -a fortn'ght previously at Greymouth, and with the conditions- much more, favourable, coupled wMi the psychological assistance of playing on t.hc.ir own ground, supporters were Quite op imistic that they would again deliver the goods. However, as matters turned out, the game was a compkite upset, as Pm'ler not onlv failed to rise super'Or on Saturday, but (were distinctly fortunate to get. out of if with a. draw. The match diil not produce the Rugby that was expected, and at ,rimes the standard was much! below that revealed in the junior curtai'n-ramer. The match was more or less a dour forward -struggle, interspersed with attempts on both sr'des to open up the game which usually tailed, through fauhy passing and handling. The Coast .forwards were much a better pack,, and after the change-over esp/.q'jilly gave a sound dikp'ay. both in the loose and in the tight woik. They rook the honours/ territoriallv. and their efforts were worth more than a try. King, Olsen and Pascoe were the best of a hardworking track, but the remainder -also responded well. K’ng was the most' useful forward on the ground. The. Coast back line did not work wall together, but as individualists did some good things. Mann and Pfahlort di'd not get many opportunjrics, but were sound on del once. The former impressed as a winger <>) class, and a good turn of speed is not hi.s only virtue. Pedrotti iwas patchy. West was weak. Hendry played fairly well!, and the bgck line as a whole did not impress as one with any great scoring power, and has yet to deve’op that combination. running, and ’ passing wh’ch usually /ring tries. Agnew, a debutante full-back in representative football, got through some heavy work in good s yle. The Buller forwards, a much lighter -s'de than their opponents, got through a strenuous task, wth cred.t. hut in- the closing s ages of the game they were tired and were a pleasim nt'when the be. 1 ! signalled the end of the game. Orman gave -h.s s <l‘ !he : r share of the bal l ., and was proinnont ! n the open play. But. rcss. Ma•oit arid Brown were a lot better than the remainder of a good, eyen lot or scrummagers. The backs, like Coast, made many lapses in attack, lheie. has no-.king constructive about the work of the inside, men, with the result that the wingers were starved. Stewart, who played such a r'lt-ti-ng good game at Greyinou h, was overenterprising, and took too much on h's own shoulders. lie iwas too keen to p'c-ise the spectators. Hanscombe nt centre was on'y fair Strachan was the outstanding Bu'ler man, defending resolutely, »and t’hrust ng hrway through the defence when a chaiiee came in hr,s d rcction. Apm fioni a, mistake, which proved a costly me. Dunn at full-back did well. Buy torfiehl ad ha'f was not as nippy or v.-rs-ril’e as Davidson. Ihe five eahths and half showed many blemishes in attack, but their defence Bullcr will bo called upon to d'ft u d the Seddon Shield on the 2.j.n, and if the trophy is I'o be kept here tie -selectors will have to do a bit of In.rd thinking prior to that date. They have got the ma-.erial to work upon, ard with a -little reshuffling the bach line could be made a more formidable combination. The side dud well < Grevm-out'h, and probably it was the selectors’ at.itude to give them an •-.-her chance. However, they failed on Saturday to repeat form, and something twill have to be done to remedy matters. Although not. wishing to- d'"-ti-te to the selectors— they are quite capable of doing their job-the wn.er is of the opinion that S-rachau should be brought a little closer to the bus m-ss centre. Undoub edly. he can play in any position, but 'that is po argument in favour of p.'acrng h>?i in a position where the services of a lai of his calibre would not, possibly, be made the most use of. He n.s fu' l of determination, speedy, aleit, ilt! | elever. He takes a power of stopping when on the move. He must be given an opportunity to d .splay the da.-h he is capable of. This is one o the problems the selectors can so v•irnl -hov should not best.ate to do so. Ru ler im-s- the stuff to return the toi-dd’, but every care and thoug 1 must be given to- the compos,'-.-on « tht side.
