REEFTON, June 12

There was another good attendance at the five-hundred tournament con ducted by the Reefton Eire Brigade, held last evening. The prizes were you by Miss S. Dobson and Mr. O. Collins. A splendid -supper was served by the ladies. The weather in Reefton to-day has been very cold, following a very heavy frost this morning, and a thick blanket of fog completely obscure 1 the sun during the day. St. Stephen’s schoolroom was the scene of a highly successful function last Wednesday, when members of the Reefton Women's Institute entertained their friends at a social afternoon in aid of the Rest Room funds. Among the many present were visitors from the Cronadun and Ikamatua Institutes. Vocal items by Mesdames _ Snajpe, Burnett and Cochrane were much enjoyed, and a violin solo and Highland Fling by little Frances McMillan, and a recitation by Jean Yellowlees, were delightfully given. Two competitions aso caused much amusement. Afternoon tea was liberally dispensed, attei which many took advantage of the opportunity of meeting Madame Godiva and several local ladies who are exponents in the art of entertaining. A sales tables in charge of Mesdames Duff and Yellowlees did good business. During the afternoon it was intimated that the next Institute meeting would lie held on June 30, instead of the 23rd —the King’s Birthday. There was a large attendance at the funeral of the late John Edward Schwass yesterday afternoon, which included practically all the settlers in the Inangahua Valley and many Reefton residents, being one of the largest ever witnessed in the Inangahua Valley. The service at the graveside was conducted by Rev. C. E. Dickens, of Wesley Church. A very large number of floral tokens gave proof of the sympathy felt for the bereaved fain-

The death took place at Reefton Hospital yesterday of a well-known Chinese resident, Ah Lon, who had been in failing health for some time past. Some years ago he was a wellknown hawker of vegetables. Visitors to Reefton yesterday were Messrs. Baenus (Christchurch), Crooks (.‘Ashburton) and Harper (Timaru). Airs. M. AVoods, of Christchurch, arrived last evening on a visit to her mother. Airs. Hunter, and left for Manila this morning. The County Alining Executive decided that AVatts and Butcher be requested to make additions to their party, and that the part}- be requested to meet the executive in conference to discusA further improvements in tho working of claim. The Labour Department notified a reduction in the amount collected from D. AVoods and party; also the travelling rate for local inspectors. It was resolved that the executive notify the Department that they consider the mileage rate for travelling be increased. A number of applications for ,prospecting subsidy and several transfers were approved, and a number of applications declined. The Alinister .of Mines advised that several applications for prospecting licenses were approved. During the week-end a golf challenge match, Ladies v. Men, over 9 holes (match play) will be played.
