MANAWATU RAILWAY BLOCKADE (Per Press Association). PALMERSTON N., February 10. Because of a blockade on the railway in the Manawatu Gorge, near the Woodville end, no trains will use the line until late to-day at least. The up and down Wellington—Napier expresses are going via the Wairarapa, passengers on connecting trains being transported between Palmerston and Woodville by bus. A threatening outerop of earth endangered the line and a small bridge, but was blasted yesterday as a safety measure, the bridge being removed. However, more rock became loose, and Is now being attended to. MIDNIGHT SERVICE. ASHBURTON, February 10. A funeral service was held at an unusual hour, this morning. Members of the railways staffs assembled just after midnight to pay their last respects to Alexander Sligo, shunter, who died yesterday. The service at the house was conducted by Rev. R. S. Watson, Presbyterian, prior to the body being placed on the night express for Dunedin. THE “JOSEPH CONRAD” AUCKLAND, February 10. Advice has been received by Captain Sergeant, harbourmaster, from A. J. Villiers, master and owner of the small full rigged ship Joseph Conrad, that the vessel was to leave Melbourne for New Zealand on February 2. The 1 ship will proceed first to Auckland or Wellington, whichever is easier to reach, with the wind encountered during the passage. It is hoped to reach New Zealand about February 20.
