Miss I, Watson, of Ashburton, arrived by yesterday’s express. Mr A. Baker returned yesterday from Christchurch. Mr L. Seebeck returned yesterday from Christchurch. Miss Margaret James returned yesterday from Christchurch. Miss Ivy Lee left yesterday on a holiday visit to Wellington. Mrs F. Victor returned yesterday from Christchurch. According to a London cablegram, the late Earl Jellicoe left, £13,370. The death has occuned. at London of Sir Charles Alfred Balance, a leading surgeon, aged SO years. Miss B. Gorman, of Doyleston, arrived yesterday on a visit to her sister, Mrs G. Barr Miss E. Ford, who has been on a holiday visit to Greymouth left last evening on return to Wellington. The death occurred early yesterday morning of Mrs J. S. Nevilie, J.P., wife of the Town Clerk of Christchurch. —Press Association. Miss Barbara Smith, formerly of the Grey Hospital nursing stall, and now residing in Sydney, is visiting the West Coast. A vote of condolence, with Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, in the death of his wife, was passed at last evening’s meeting of the Grey Hospital Board. Mr T. F. Savage, foreman of the jobbing department, of the Greymouth “Evening Star’’ has accepted a similar position at Dunedin, and leaves next week to take up his new position. Mrs W. L. Cox, Miss E. Cox, Mr A. Cox and Miss P. Fleming arrived by yesterday’s express, to .attend the wedding of Miss E. Lees to Mr A. Cox, which, will take place this evening.
Miss M. Wilson, of Dunedin, formerly of the staff of the Dunedin Technical College, has been appointed mistress for the first term in English and history for senior forms at the Greyniouth Technical High School. Miss Wilson has arrived from Dunedin.
Passengers by yesterday’s express to Christchurch included Mrs W. J. Chatfield, Mrs W, Nicie (on return to Dunedin)., Miss M, M. Milligan (to Wellington), Miss B. Smith (on return), Miss C. McDonald (Granity), Mr F. Barrell and Mr J. Quinn (on return to Lvttolton).
Mr 11. Lawson Smith, of the literary staff of the Greymouth "Evening Star,” has resigned to take up a position on the staff of the New Zealand "Herald,” Auckland. Mr R. A. L. Kay, of the literary staff of the "Grey Ri.ver Argus,” has been appointed to a similar position on the staff of the "Greymouth Evening Star.”
