ST. BEDE’S OLD BOYS

WEST COAST ASSOCIATION. The fourth annual reunion of the West Coast branch of St. Bede’s Old Boys’ Association attracted a large gathering of members from all part? of the Coast on Tuesday evening, at Herb Moore’s Cabaret. Rev. Father R. O’Gorman, -of Hokitika, presided. The annual report was read by the secretary as follows: —Your committee has much pleasure in submitting its report for the year ending August 31st, 1935, and congratulates members on another successful year. Membership: The number of Old Boys on the Coast now is close on 60. and is increasing each year. The branch was unfortunate this year in losing the services of a good committeeman, Mr Frank Thorpy. and we wish him every success in England. Finances: The finances .of thc branch in spite of the stringent times, still disclose a sound and healthy condition. Thc branch subscribed a fine trophy out of its funds )for competition amongst the College, members. Rev. Fr. Spring: The West Coast branch ’ost a vers valuable member this year when < ur president, Rev. Fr. Spring, was transferred to tjl’P North Island. Old Boys wish Rev. Fr. Spring every success and happiness in his new parish. An election of officers for the ensuing year was held, and the following were elected: President Rev. Fr. Ron O’Gorman; vice-presidents. Dr. J. W. Bridgman, Messrs T. H. Lee (Reefton). T. Anisy: secretary-treasur-er, Mr P. Blanchfiold; commit r ce, Messrs J. Stuart (Hokitika), T. Furlong (Ngaherc). J. Stopforth D. Diedrich (Hokitika). T. O’Donnell (Greymouth). v After; the of “The Pope and the King,” the toast of “The C-o’-lege” was proposed by Mr J. Stuart who mentioned the suecessfu’ efforts of S(. Bede’s College in the past year to maintain her prestige. Hr traced .the life of the College from a small school into an institution which was well-known in New Zealand today. Rev. Father O’Gorman, in reply, sfiated that St. Bede’s to-day was

still developing into a large institution, both in education and in sport. He recalled thp fine sporting record of St. Bede’s this year, which, in spite of influenza and such handicaps, put up a fine record. He explained the College motto. “Fide et Opere.” “By Faith and by Work.” and asked Old Boys on the Coast to live up to the principles taught in their Alma Mater, to be loyal to their CoTege, and good citizens amongst.' their fellow men.

■The toast of “The Association” was proposed by the Christchurch representative, Mr P. Griftin. He stressed the wiork of the executive, and was pleased to see such an excellent gath ering «s that staged on the Wes*J Coast. The toast was replied to by Mr P. Blanehfield. who mentioned the ideals of the St.. Bede’s Old Boys’ Association and the good work ac cnmplished. Every year the association donated scholarships to th e College, and also trophies for sport. He said it was one of the best O'd Boys’ Associations of any in New Zealand. The toast of “Country Members” was proposed by Mr T. Anisy. who mentioned the sacrifice some members had made on behalf of the association to come in from such a distance. Replies were made by Messrs C. Sanders (Npahere), J. O’Donnell (Roa), and J. Stopforth (Kokaitahi). During the evening, items were given bv Messrs J. O’Donnell (*nr dances) and J. Stuart. Ghor toasts were spoken to by Messrs W. G'lbert, T. O’Donnell and P. CarrolL Arrange rnents were made to ho'd the next reunion at Hokitika. The evening eluded with the Co’lege haka, and ’ho singing of “Auld Lang Syne.’’
