FOR HUEY LONG FEAR OF STRIFE Funeral of Weiss (Aus and N.Z. Cable Assn.> NEW YORK September 9. With fairly reliable- reports that Long has taken a turn for the worse thisi morning, the attempted assassination of the dictator of Louisana has began to assume a more grave political significance. Earlier he was reported to be improving. The assassin, Dr. Weiss’s father-in-law, Judge Pavy to-day said: “I am certain his intensive study of the Louisiana political situation convinced him. that the form of Government of the State under Long’s dictatorship was so tjerrible and such a miscarriage of justice tbav his breedings finally unbalanced his mind.” LONG’S CRITICAL STATE. (Received September 10, at 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, .September 9, Senateor Huey Long underwent a second blood transfusion, and, despite the silence of his attending physician* rumours have continued that he is rapidly losing strength. FUNERAL OF DR. WEISS. (Received September 10, at 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 9. The funeral of Doctor Weiss., who shot Senator Long, and was himself riddled with bullets, was he d at Baton Rouge this afternoon. PROPOSE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION. (Received September 10, at 9.15 p.m.) NEW YORK. September 9. The attempt on Senator Long’s life hastened the organisation of a move meat to run Senator Long for the Pre idoiiey, ” The “Share Our Wealth Society” of St. Louis sent the stricken 1 ader a spray of flowers with a message: “God bless you!” and announe cd that it would, within the next few days open offices and begin a “Long For President” campaign. DOCTOR GIVES UP HOPE. (Received September 10, at 9 15 p.m.) NEW YORK. September 10. Regarding the state of Senator Long twenty-four hours after the shooting, his physicians abandoned the hope of Long’s recovery. His family left the hospital at 10.20 p.m., at which time the Senator was in a state of coma. A third blood transfusion was given at 11 p.m., but this was apparently without beneficial results. Long Succumbs BATON ROUGE. September 10. Senator Huey Long died at 2 a.m. Eastern Standard time. CIVIL STRIFE. FEARED IN LOUISIANA. (Received September 10, at 9.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 9. Within the State of Louisiana itself the possib’e removal of Senator Long seems to have brought about conditions threatening civil strife. Not only are National Guardsmen patrolling the ciity of Baton Rouge, but men with sawn off shot-guns are everywhere about the Government Buildings. Significantly enough, the Legislator? to-day passed the Bill sponsored by Long that will result in the removal from office of Judge Pavy, of the opposition political party by altering the boundary of his electorate to include more Long supporters. ROOSEVELT CONDEMNS SHOOTING (Received September 10, a/t 9.15 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 9. President Roosevelt, decrying the attempt on Senator Long’s life, said: “The spirit of violence is un-Ameri-can, and has no place in the consideration of public affairs, and 'east of all at a time when a calm, dispassionate approach to the difficult problems of the dav is so essential.’*
