Opera House BENGAL LANCERS A picture which combines magnificence, sheer spectacle and breath-tak-ing action with the poignance of human drama. Paramount’s “The Lives of a Bengal Lanc-er” came to the Opera House to meet with an enthusiastic reception. Gary Cooper, Franehot Tone, Richard Cromwell and Sir Guy Standing head the east. The drama arises from the conflict between Sir Guy Standing, hard-shelled colonel, and his subordinate officers. Cooper and Tone adopt Cromwell, the colonel’s impulsive son, as their charge. When he becomes involved with a Russian girl and is carried off by a neighbouring chieftain. Cooper and Tone follow, although the colonel refuses to go to his son’s rescue. They are captured and the chieftain employs torture to wring the secret of an enormous ammunition convoy from Cromwell. The chieftain captures the ammunition. The Lancers prepare to attack to check the revolt which will follow. Cooper hits upon a plan and, swearing the boy to secrecy on his own shameful betrayal goes out to blow the fort to smithereens and save the Lancers. Regent Theatre “BELLA DONNA’’ The talking picture version of “Bella Donna,” which will commence at th® Regent Theatre to-day, is distinguished by a remarkable cast. In addition to Mary Ellis in the title role, Conrad Veidt as “Baroudi” and Sir C. Hardwicke as Dr. Isaacson, “Eve” the famous dancer who recently appeared in many C. B. Cochran stage shows, will make her appearance. She will do one of her beautiful Egyptian dances in the scene where Bella Donna follows Baroudi into a cafe to find him being entertained by dancing girls. John Stuart, who is prabably one of Britain’s most popular screen actors will have the role of Nigel Armine, Bella Donna’s young husband. The cast also includes Michael Shepley, Jeanne Stuart, Rodney Millington and George Carr Excellent supporting subjects. “A NIGHT IN JAPAN” Who remembers the successful novelty dances run last year in the Runanga gymnasium? Once again, at Runanga, on Friday night, there comes forth an entirely new novelty— “A Night in Japan, ” presented by the Runanga League Club and the Runanga Girls’ Basketball Club, which promises to surpass all others. The hall will be tastefully decorated in real Japanese style. Included in the novelty dances will be a Cinderella Dance, Lucky Spot and a new style of Monte Carlo. The Hirota Orchestra will supply first class music for modern and old-time dancing. Coburn’s bus will leave the Post Office at 8, 9.10 and 10.30 p.m. and there will be a return bus after the dance. A first class supper will be provided and an excellent evening’s fun is assured. ODDFELLOWS’ BALL. Reef ton danee votaries are reminded of the first annual ball of the Oddfellows*’ Lodge there on Friday evening next in the Gymnasium Hall. The committee are going to no end of ■trouble to make the function a suecpss and a crowded attendance should result. There will be a first-elass floor, excellent supper (including fruit salad). Popular prices will prevail, and with the music by the Broadway Boy’s* Dance Band, dancing will be a treat.
