An application by the. County Council to the Unemployment Board for a loan to compete the La Fontaine Road to the mouth of the Big Wanganui River, where a sawmill is being erected, has been unsuccessful. The idea is to establish a serviceable port for the export of timber. Advice was received that the Board was unable to make a loan. The Council decided to renew the application to the Minister of Public. Works, and to send a deputation to Wellington including a representative of the K.D.V. Timber Company, which already has spent £20,000 in ’he milling industry in the locality, and is responsib'e for the shipping project at the river mouth, where its mill will operate. An increase of £7BB in the hospital levy has to be met by the Westland County Council this year, the total being £2345. Some concern at the increase was expressed by members who feared that the Council might have an increase in its rates. The position was debated by four councillors, who are members of the Hospital Board. Messrs. W. A. Jamieson and N. H. Brown each stressed the large in-, urease in the number of patients and in the nursing and domestic staffs. They outlined proposals providing for adequate accommodation which had been adopted and approved by the department. The increase in the number of patients was due to industries, particularly milling and bigger population. Mr. W. Jeffries, a member of the Board, said that he based his objection on the fact of an increase in salaries of the higher paid officials in face of advice from the department that the increased amounts would have to be found by the contributing bodies. Nurses and probationers had not been considered. Some ratepayers found difficulty in meeting the ordinary levy. There was room for economy but this would not be reached unless the council’s representatives upheld the meeting when the salary adjustments were made. Mr. J. A. Murdoch objected to salary cuts being restored by the re-* tiring board in its dying hours, and said a grave mistake was in making the restoration retrospective. Hospital adminstration should be in the hands of the Government. After considerable discussion the levy was accepted.
