CONTINUES AT SYDNEY Victimisation Issue (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. - ) SYDNEY, August 12. The seamen’s meeting to discuss the hold up is proceeding. Most quarters are optimistic as to the outcome. The possibility of th© Wianganella getting away with Mr Forbes, the Maoris and Now Zealand hockey players aboard, depends on the outcome of the meeting. The vessel, meantime, is scheduled to sail at 8 p.m. Mr Forbes spent to-day sight seeing, including the zoo at Koala Park, and to-morrow he visits the Royal Military College wher© there arc 11 New Zealanders. The seamen at to-day’s meeting reaffirmed 'the decision (to maintain their ‘ ‘black” ban on the Huddart Parker Company’s ships until th©' “Zeatandia” trouble had been adjusted, and they also decided to extend the trouble if The men (who were offered first as “pick ups” are not accepted because of their having unsatisfactory discharges. The. ships now affected in Sydney are the Zealandia. AVangane'la, 3 a lune and Mildura. The Wanganelln will consequently not be sailing for New Zealand tonight. Mr Forbes. Now Zealand Premier, and the Maori footballers will bo unable to sail until Thursday, when the AFarama. is due to leave for Wellington.
To-day’s meeting of the seamen gave a poor hearing to the moderates,, hut there will be another meeting held to-morrow, when, the result of meetings being hold at. Melbourne and at Newcastle 'will be discussed. More seamen should bo in port for to-morrow’s meeting, and the moderates will make a determined effort to capture the meeting, and to defeat the strike extension plans. Melbourne Meeting SUPPORT FOE SYDNEY STAND. EXTENSION OF STOPPAGE LIKELY. MELBOURNE. August 12. In defining the Seamen’s Union’s attitude t’o the hold-up, Mr W. Clarke, Federal Presiden't of the Seamen’s Union, declared that th© seamen did not regard the issue as a strike. He Said: “The ships are idle as the result of a boycott by the owners, following on tihe victimis'ation of men who were dismissed from the Mur:rdfi.” (Received August 12. at 11.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE. August 12. After t'he meeting which lasted till oariy this evening, the Victorian seamen decided to support the Sydney strike. A decision was also taken to use every effort “to bring the strike to a s’uccessful conclusion.” The meeting was also attended by men from ships which reached port todav. This means that more ships will be helfl up as they reach Melbourne. An extension of the strike to the Melbourne-Tasmania service is feared as five men are expected to leave the Natrana on her arrival from T.auncoston to-mor-row Tt is expected that a difficulty will be experienced in replacing them. This service has not been interrupted for many years.
