FARMING NOTES
JERSEY COW’S YIELD. SYDNEY, July 15. A Jersey cow, Richmond Posy V., at Hawkesbury College over a period of five years produced 75,1891 b of milk equal to 55401 b of commercial butler. This is claimed to be world’s record for a cow under eight years. Reference to 'the production of some of the best cows in the Dominion was made last week by Air. J. P. Kalaugher secretary of the New Zealand Friesian Association, who pointed out that the wording of the cablegram was ambiguous in that it was not stated whether it was lactation periods or actual years that were referred to. The outstanding cow in New Zealand, he stated, was Totara C.R. Buttercup, who in the last five lactation periods, and up to the age of eight years, had produced 125,7511 b of milk and 47381 b of butter-fat, the equivalent of 59791 b of commercial butter.

Applications for licenses are to be made to the director of the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, and are to he accompanied by details of existing or proposed buildings, or of proposed alterations. The director of the Dairy Division is empowered to refer applications for licenses to a committee of three per-
sons a ppointed by the Minister of Agriculture. Title committee will advise the director on the question of the advisability and the justification for a dairy factory in the locality concerned, its prospect of success, and probable or possible effect of competition from the premises sought to be licensed.
