Frederick George Cox was sentenced to nine months’ reformative detention for theft from his employers, Niven and C 0... for whom he was accountant. WELLINGTON THEFT SENTENCES WELLINGTON August 1. Prisoners were sentenced to-day by Chief Justice Mver<- as follows:— Patrick Joseph O’Connor, two years’ probation, for theft, committed in 1932. Kenneth Wiliam Mailman, three rears’ reformative detention: and Earle Dodds, three vears at Borstal, breaking, entering and theft, at Wanganui. A 1931 TRAIN ROBBERY. MAN ACQUITTED. (Received August 1 at 9.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 1. The trial concluded to-dav of Joseph Rvan on a charge of stealing ten thousand pounds in hank notes, from a Canberra mail train on Mav 1. in the vear 1931. Over seven thousand pounds wore recovered bv the police some time later. It was buried in a country fowl yard. The jury returned a verdict of not guiltv. Ryan, who absented himself for some time after the robbery, returned some time ago. and informed the police that he had earlier been unable to clear himself from suspicion in the matter, but was now able to do so.

At the police court Herbert Howard, or Herbert Lawrence Handley, aged 40 vears, a -winter and decorator, was charged, by a provisional warrant, with having at Wellington, tl committed an offence of false pretence.” Detective Spencer, of Wellington, said tht?,t Howard had escaped from oustedv b?/ Februarv 18, 1933, while being taken bv train from Auckland to another town. The Court ordered Howard to be handed over to the custody of Detective Spencer for return to New Zealand
