U.S.A. TRADE TREATY Ocean Airways to N.Z. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received Jn'y 31. at 7.30 p.ni.y SAN FRANCISCO. July 30. In an interview here with the Australian Associated Press representative to-day, Mr J. G. Coates (New Zealand Finance Minister) said that during a brief visit to Washington he had been received by President Roosevelt, to whom he had suggested the desirability of the United States and New Zealand, having a reciprocal trade agreement. Preliminary negotiations for such an agreement, he said, were now under way at Washington. Mr Coates stated: 4 ‘The trade balance is three to one in the United States favour. We must try to equalise 'the balance by America buying more (of our goods.’ l He predicted that both the Imperial Airways and the Pan-American Airways services wi'l be extended to con net both Australia and New Zealand w th America by the year 1937. Mr Coates is sailing for New Zealand to-morrow (Wednesday) aboard the Maunganui.
