BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) A birthday party was held in the residence of Mr and Mrs George Anderson, Brodie Street' on Saturday evening in honour of Messrs W. Dillon and G. Martin. A large company of young folks gathered, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The following items were contributed: Tap dance, Mr J. O’Donnell; duet. “Ise of Capri.” Messrs G. Dillon and S« Naylor; song x “Old Faithful,” Mr L. Anderson; duet, “Roll Along Covered Wagon,” Messrs D. McVicar and 8. Naylor; aong, “Rose of Tra'ee,” Mr 11. Ritchie; song, “Wagon Wheels,” Mr G. Martin; song “Suicide Sal” Mr E. Park. Possibly the outstanding item of the evening were recitations de’-ivered in the true Irvinovian style one by “Gog” “I Never Had a Chance with Mopoke” and the other by the “Argo Kid” “Betfty Ann.” Both pieces were original and appropriate. The young ladies present provided an excellent’ supper, which vs as thoroughly enjoyed by all present. Games and. dancing was a!so enjoyed. The ladies present included: Misses M. Stenhouse. E. Quibell, J. Kirk, M. Park E, Burn, L. Duncan, E. McDonald and U. McLuskie. A hearty vot e of Chanks was accorded Mr and Mrs Anderson for the use of the premises and an enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” A meeting of th c local branch of the U.W.M.. was held in the Miners’ Hal! on Sunday morning for the purpose of bearing an address from Mr Omerod, Wellington, Mr Joe Dillon occupy ii.g -the chair. The minutes of the previous m eting were read and conconfirmed. The secretary was instructed to get into touch with the Minister of Public Works Mr Bitehener. pointing out the drawbacks to monthly pays on track jobs under the P.W.D. and requesting that fortnightly pays be instituted. Mr Omerod addressed the meeting at length and explained the position of the organisation in the verious centres he had touched during his tour of the Coast. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address. Lt was agreed to call the attention of Mr Bromley (Deputy-Chairman of the Unemployment Board) to the delay in the issue of boots nd blankets, the ■en'tral organisation (through Mr Omerod) agreeing t'o send a deputation to meet rbe Board if no satisfaction was forthcoming. Mr Omerod having answered questions to the satisfaction of the questioners, the meeting was brought to a close. The condition of Mr G. N. Clark. Moonlight Road, who was admitted to the Grev Hospital last Tuesday night, suffering from pneumonia, is reported to be very satisfactory. Quite a number of thp Blaekba'l labour stalwarts journeyed across to Ngahero last Friday evening to hear Mr J. A. Lee. M.P., for Grey Lynn, .deliver an address on Labour’s Policy. The night was bittenly cold, but in spite of this drawback there was a fair attendance. Mr J. Mulcare occupied the chair. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P.. briefly addressed the meeting, after which Mr Lee .dealt with Labour’s policy along the Hues of his speeches in other partn of Westland. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for bis able address and a vote of confidence in thoLabour Party was passed r.nanimouslv. In view of the forthcom-
