A large tangi is proceeding in Taranaki. the occasion being the death of a Maori veteran of the M'ori War.*. George Taylor, who had attained the age of 90 years. Tavlor. who once was sentenced to den 4| h. but was later pardoned was concerned in the ambush and massK're of eight men of the 57th Regiment on Wairau beach, on Mnv 4, 1863. Among the dead was Assistant Surgeon W. A. Hope, who had been unarmed and for whose murder Taylor was later tried. He was captured on Mav 29. 1863. bv Lieut.' Wallor of the 57th Regiment, ami was 1 found to be in possession of Hope’s watch and chain and of his ring and locket. His trial raised a storm of controversy, because, a’though all be Heved Taylor guilty, many doubted the legal evidence. Tavlor was convicted and sentenced to death. Taylor’s defence was that the fighting at Wairau was an ar* of warfare.
