WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Late Mrs McKendry: WESTPORT June 12. The funeral of the late Mrs Rose McKendry took place from her residence to-day and was largely attended. Deceased was G 9 years of ago and was born i n Central Otago. She lived for many years in Westport and commanded the esteem of all. Deceased is survived by her one daughter and three sons, to whom the sympathy of the community will' be extended in their sad visitation. A Cold Snap: Westport, in common with all parts of the Coast, i.-t at present experiencing very cold weather and white flannels, which were so popular a month back are now as scarce as the house fly. '1 he cold snap ;has been accompanied b\ driving showers, which made matters very unpleasant. However, to-day the conditions have underwent a change. The temperature, if anything was lower than usual in th*' morning but the sun later made its appearance and rain has ceased. The surrounding hills, which -have been hidden for the past week in a dense mist, are now revealed well coated in snow and out lined against the blue sky, present a very pleasing picture.

‘‘Mock Wedding Breakfast”: The above was the subject of a talk at the initial meeting of the Westport Debating Society and some of the ini prompt u efforts of members present were interesting. The- meeting was convened by Mr 11. Maitland for tho Labour rooms, but it was discovered at the last minute that the place was engaged previously by the Unemployed I’nion for the purpose of holding a fovial function. Mr T. Parfitt occupied the chair at the monthly meeting of the Westport School Committee, held last evening. I ho chaiinian expressed regret at losing the se. vices of Mrs Gardiner, -who had acted as caretaker of the school for the thirty years. Mrs Gill Messrs Hart, Knight, Birds ißiees and Sutherland endorsed the remarks of Mr Parfitt. Arising out of the Dental Clinic report, it was decided that parents, of untinancial children be advised that the latter will be struck off the roil if not nettled up before July 30th. The Headmaster reported that some of the children could not buy milk and

these had been helped through donations received from residents. In this respect any .further donations wouKl be appreciated. Messrn W. Jones and J. Harris were appointed a visiting committee for the month. In reply to enquiries made as to whether the Assembly Hall is available for use for meetings), etc., the Chairman annwered in the affirmative. A notice of motion., brought forward by Mr 11. Sutherland, that the retiring' age of caretakers be males > years, and females GO years was carried The motion does not affect the present clause re. each side giving a month’s notice.

The Headmaster, Mr Eggelton, in the course of his report, mentioned that the roll had shown an in increase .-•’nee his last report as the following will indicate: Admitted 7 boys and .13 girls; .left’ 2 buys and 4 girls; average attendance 281 boys and 269 g’fl? (total 550),. average attendance 271 boys ami 256 girls (total 527), percentage 95.8.

Social Function: The Labour Party held the usual weekly .-Joc’ial function last evening

end the .ladies’ committee appreciated the improved public patronage given to the entertainment. Competitions held during the evening were won by Mesdames Oldham, Brewer Mis# Mary Douglas and Mr Lewis. A dainty supper was provided. The usual function in aid of the Campaign Fund will be held on Friday evening.

Shipping: The Kartigi is* due to-day from New Plymouth. Owing to rough weather,, the departure of the Poo.lta is delayed. Morgan’s Pictures Tom Walls and Ralph Lynn with their associate author Ben Travers, have established a definite reputation with their highly popular brand of farce comedy, and “A Cup of Kindness” their latest effort is cast in the same happy, hilarious mould. “A Cup of Kindness” is the feature attraction at tin Theatre Royal to-night (Thursday) and matinee to-day at 2.30. The story is concerned with the enmity between two suburban families, and filled with complications which lead to riotous fun, and witty dialogue. Dorothy Hyson, Robertson Hare and Claude Hulbert are also featured. Recommended by censor for adults. Good supports. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. Carol Lombard and May Robson have the principal featured roles in the Columbia production “Lady By Choice” at the Theatre Royal, Friday and Saturday, also Matinee on Saturday, 2.30 p.m. A story of laughter and tears, romance and fun in the heart thrill of the year.
