DUNEDIN BURGLARY. DUNEDIN, June 11. The premises of J. R. McKenzie were broken into during the weekend, and goods, principally cigare tes and tobacco, valued at £24, were stolen. Admission was gained by forcing the back window. Last evening another store wa s entered and tobacco valued at £l2 stolen. In the latter case, detectives recovered the stolen property this morning and arrested two boys. MAORI CLERGYMAN'S HOUSE BURNT. GISBORNE. June 11.
A Royal gift and many family heirlooms were among the contents of the Rev. P. M. Kohere’s house at Rangilukia, destroyed by fire on Sunday. The family escaped hurriedly. The contents destroyed included a Highland Claymore, presented for valour. FLASHLIGHT FOR BAD CROSSING. AUCKLAND, June. 11. Although several fatal accidents have occurred at the Portage Road level crossing, in New Lynn borough, the Council has been informed by the General Manager of Railways that it i< only the twentieth on the Department’s urgent list. The Council, supported by a residents’ petition, has been endeavouring to have a warning device installed at the crossing. The General Manager, after inspection, admitted that the crossing was dangerous, but said there were others which had prior claim, and there was very little money available for such work The cost of installing a flashlight warning was £260. He promised to resurvey the position and to meet the Council’s representatives again within three months
The Council, last night, decided to let the matter stand oven, pending the General Manager’s decision.
