WINTRY WEATHER

Snow on Coast SOME AT GREYMOUTH. The cold southerly weather, which commenced on Saturday, made conditions again miserable in Greymouth yesterday, and following a bitterly cold day, snow began to fall last night at ten o’clock, but owing to the rain which had fallen previously, it did not remain on the ground. However, from ten until eleven there was an almost continuous light fall. The snowfall inland was much heavier, and there was snow on the ground yesterday right from Murchison down to within a few miles of Greymouth It appears that the fall will be the heaviest experienced on the West Coast for several winters. There was a couple of inches of snow in Reef-

ton last evening, and motorists travelling in the Grey Valley, Buller Gorge and further north had to encounter a steady fall. The Southern Alps have received a heavy mantle during the past few days, and this will make for colder weather until the spring conditions return. In Canterbury, where the snowfall at the week-end was the heaviest for seventeen years, conditions are now approaching normal and the remaining link in the disorganised telegraphic communication system, south of Christchurch, was restored last evening. The telegraphic and telephone lines between the West Coast and Canterbury remained still out of commission yesterday. The havoc wrought by the snow in Canterbury and near the ranges at the week-end has created the longest break in overland telegraphic communication for some years. The transmission to and from Greymouth has been carried by way of Nelson, while Christchurch is using the Blenheim route. The snow last night between here and Nelson did not interfere with transmission. WELLINGTON. June 11. The Post and Telegraph Department advised at 8.45 p.m., that communication with the south had been restored, and that traffic was now normal.
