ITALY’S PROPOSALS
FOR A SETTLEMENT Of Abyssinia Boundary DESIRE TO AVERT RUPTURE. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) GENEVA, May 23. The Italian Abyssinia situation has entered a deadlock. Mu solini has rejected the mediators’ proposals. (Received May 24,„7.3U p.m.) GENEVA, May 23. Though the Italo-Abyssinian situation is serious, Italy is believed to i'.ave advanced counter proposals for a settlement to those of Abyssinia, as the result of discussions here by Mr A. Eden. M. Laval and Signor Aloisi. There is a general desire to avoid a rupture, and there is no disposition to shelve the question. The League Council will deal with the question on May 24th or May 25th. ARBITRATION EFFORTS. LONDON. May 24 The correspondent of the “Daily fail” at Geneva, says: “The Ttalan delegates are awaiting a reply from Rome regarding the Abyssinian qu-.'- ion which is expected to cont ; a decision as to whether neace or war will result. Telegrams from Rome thus far have warned that the League must not meddle in the negotiations until arbitration has failed to secure a reconciliation.’’ ROME. Mav 23.
Signor Gavda, the editor, in another sensational article in “ Giornale DT'alia*’ accuses Britain of forming military bases among the. British mineral concessions in Abyssinia, and on ‘lie pretence that they are football fields of organising aerodromes, where the buildings could easily be converted into hangars. S’gnor Gayda alleged that British aircraft are concentrated in Khar toum and elsewhere, and 'hat Britain is building a network of railways to the Sudan border, and concentrating a considerable number of troops on the Abyssinian frontier, forcing Abyssinia, as a precaution, to do likewise. He asks if these acts are mere ly defensive, why the British make a fuss over Italy’s preparations. LONDON, May 22. Official circles s'ate that there is not Ihe slightest foundation for any of Signor Gayda’s allegations. ITALY AND EGYPT. REACH AIR AGREEMENT. (Received Mav 21. .8 10 p.m.) GENEVA. May 22. Reports from Cairo s'ate that Italy and ’Egypt have reached an agreement under which Italian aeroplanes will he permitted to fl v over Egypt for six months. This will enable Italian planes to reach Italian Somaliland in four days from Rome. A regular service is sho’-*lv being inaugurated.
