ROOSEVELT’S VETO
OF SOLDIER BONUS Barely Sustained BY THE SENATE. WASHINGTON. May 23. Voting 54 'io 40, lhe Senate' blocked the enactment of the Patman soldibonus bill, by refusing to pass the legislation over Mr .Roosevelt veto. (Received Mav 24 at p.m.) WASHINGTON", May 23. The Senate, apparently taking to heart President Roosevelt’s vigorous message vetoing the bonus bill, sustained his action. The voting was: For the Bill 54; against 40. Although a sizeable majority of fourteen voted in favour of fiat money for the veterans, the total (54) was eight short of the two-thirds majority that would be necessary to override the President’s veto. Apparently, at the last minute, several Democrats decided to stand with the President, much to the surprise and disappointment of the veterans anl their spokesmen in Congress. It now seems likely that the radical inflationists have been curbed for the duration of the present session.
