WESTPORT NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) Educational Matters: WESTPORT, April 15. Hon. W. H. Mclntyre was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board held yesterday. Regarding the establishment of a school at Antonio’s Flat and Big River the chairman and secretary were authorised to visit the districts ami report on the position at next meeting. It was decided to call tenders for the removal of the school at Kongahu io a new site. W. Taylor’s tender for alterations to Sergeant’s Hill school was accepted. Regarding the establishment of a school at Ariki it was reported that the Minister of Education visited the district and as a result it was anticipated that the work would be put in hand shortly. A request from the headmaster at Stockton re the purchase of a residence in that township was declined with regret. The Board’s maintenance staff was instructed to attend to repairs at Birchfield sc,hook The sum of, £6 10s was granted to the Granity Committee for a couch and woodwork bench. A request from Seddonville Committee for £5 for woodwork equipment was declined. The matter of repairs to the teacher’s residence at Summerlea was referred to the secretary with power to act. The. chairman reported in very complimentary terms in connection with the visit of the Minister of Education (Hon. S. G. Smith) to the southern end of the Board’s district, and intimated that the Minister would visit Nelson city, Motueka and Collingwood schools within a few weeks.
The Education Department notified the appointment of R. Hunter, Inver eargill, as acting senior inspector during the absence of Mr Overton on sick leave and asked the Board to release Mr n. McClune, headmaster of Nelson Central School to act as temporary inspector during the second term. The Board granted the Department’s request, members complimenting Mr McChine on his promotion and extend ing the best wishes of the Board to Mr Overton for a speedy and com pie to recovery. The Board adopted eight remits for consideration at the Education Boards’ conference at Wellington next week, which tiie chairman and secretary attend.
Tlie llinnl congratulated tlie Napier s.-bool I'mniiiittee on providing their own school radio set. The Boaid adop ed the secretary’s timetable for manual training classes in the Westport district. The resignations of Miss F. Holmes. Matariki, Mr W. Pratt., Reefton and Mr A. Reynolds, Wai-iti were accepted. The following appointments were made: Assistant mistress, Reefton Miss O. Wallace; head teacher. Reefton, Mr F. Hayes; Matariki school Mr C. Block, of Grafton, Auckland. Prior to the conclusion of the meeting a telegram was read from the Minister of Education approving of. the establishement of a school al Ariki.
Social Function: There was a fairly large gathering at the Labour Party’s weekly card party and social function ami a very pleasant evening was enjoyed by all. The ladies’ committee in their usual capable manner, provided a very daintv supper ami in other ways looked after the comfort of their patrons. Competitions held during the evening W ere won by Mrs Williams, Messrs Williams, McLaughlin and Solomon.
Shipping: The Totara arrived from WellingThe Kairanga sails from Wellington to-night for this port. The Karatu is accepting cargo at Lyttelton to-day for this port, and will sail direct. There were no arrivals or departures yesterday.

It is recommended by the Censor for adults, and supports are News Reel, Scenic and Two-reel Comedy. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY. Gaumont-British present “Jack Ahoy,' 1 at the Victoria Theatre on Friday and Saturday and matinee on Saturday. Patrons may get ready for the laugh of a lifetime as the irresistible Jack Hulbut outwits bandits, steals a submarine, tricks the Navy, and saves the Admiral. The east includes Taman Disni, Nancy O’Neill, Alfred Drayton and Harrv Peterson. It is approved for Universal exhibition ami the supports include the 9th episode of the Serial.
