ABYSSINIA v. ITALY

DISPUTE UNSETTLED Concern Caused (Aus. and N.Z. Cabin Assn.) (Received May 10 at 10.28 p.m.) LONDON, May 10. British official circles continue to be concerned over the situation in Abyssinio. It is thought Signor Mussolini does not appreciate that immense difficulties are facing him in Eritrea and Italian Somaliland, where proper facilities for concentrating large bodies of troops are lacking. The garrisons there already have suffered heavy casualties from sickness. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Addis Ababa correspondent says: The Emperor of Aabyssinia in a special interview told me that still he hopes for a settlement as a result of the meeting of the League Council at Geneva on May 20, but that he will be obliged to order a general mobilisation if Italy continues her war preparations. He said: “Ethiopia will never accept a state of unofficial war, as when Japan car- I ried out operation in Manchuria we will immediately resist.” ITALY’S VIEW. ROME. May 10. There is an increasing tendency to represent the Italo-Abyssinian disput? as being important to world civilisaSenator Sehanzer, presenting the Colonia] Estimates, declared .that the slavery, and the other primitivism in Abyssinia is irreconcilable with normal international relations. Therefore, Italy was both protecting her own rights and national, dignity, and was representing the duty of ordered, productive civilisation. He added that events have proved that Africa is destined to be a battle ground between East and West, in which the latter must maintain its superiority. The newspapers declare Italy is protesting against the nations that are supplying arms to Abyssinia, pointing out that Italy’s friendship depends on the cessation of such a course.
