MURDER CHARGE
HAWKE’S BAY CASE. A FURTHER REMAND. NAPIER, March 21. Charles William Price, alias ’Edwards, indicted on a charge of murdering Evelyn Mary Madden, at Argyle, East Waipawa, early in February,. appeared before Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., at. the Napier Police Court this morning, and was further remanded until April 11. Appearing for the police. Detective Sergeant J. Bickerdike stated that the investigations into the case had not been completed. It was certain, however. that the police case would be readv by April 11. fo which date he
asked that accused be remanded. Mr S. Averill, counsel for Price, agreed to the request, and the remand was granted. A crowd of 10(5. mostly men. gathered outside the Napier Courthouse, and waited for the appearance of Price and his escort from the direction of the Police Station. Accused however, was taken to the Courthouse early, and entered by a side door. He also escorted a wav from the Courthouse through the back entrance. As a result, the great majority of the public was still waiting for his appearance when the ca<e had been dealt with, and the accused was half-way back to the Police Station.
Detectives’ Claim DAMAGES AWARDED. LONDON. March 20. Damages of £3OOO each were awarded to ex-Detectives Edgai Graham and Ernest Stenning. of th*Metropolitan Police, who succeeded in a libel action against ‘‘John Bull.” in which an article written by an exconvict accused them of accenting his bribes, blackmailing him. and conspiring to share his profits.
