QUARTZ MINER KILLED

At Big River BY FALL OF STONE. > A fatal accident oceured at the Big River gold mine, near Reef ton, yesterday afternoon, whereby a miner, Charles Cooper, single, aged 55 years, was killed. It appears that the deceased was working in the No. 4 level, when just on knock-off time a quantity of stone broke away from the fall, burying him and killing him instantly. He had been working in the mine since it reopened about two years ago. This was the first fatal accident at the Big River for many years.

Deceased, who was a native of Kutnara, is survived by his mother, who resides at Rimu, and five brothers, Frank (Greymouth), James (Hokitika), Walter (Temuka), William (Otago), and Jack (South Westland). His father predeceased him about five months ago. An inquest will be held at Reefton.
