Questioned regarding the recent prosecution of a Buller eoal miner, Mr. A. Dellaway, on a charge of having in the mine explosives in excess of the regulation quantity, .Mr. W. Purdy, President of the Grey Valley Miners’ Union, said that the case was one where an excessive penalty had been imposed. This, he considered was due to the presiding Magistrate having not had adequate familiarity with the conditions of coal mining. Had he been better acquainted with those conditions. such a penalty would never have been imposed. The miner in question, added Mr Purdy, had the sympathy of the mining community generally.
