PLUNKET SOCIETY
ANNUAL MEETING. The Mayor (Mr J.|W. Greenslade) presided over the ninth annual meeting of the Greymouth Branch of the Plunket Society, members of the Society present being:—Alesdames F. AT. Dennehy (President), W. Fletcher, A. IT. Wilde, L. Leahy, A. O. Harris, AT. Phillips, King and Timlin (Runanga Sub-Branch), and Miss Al. Anderson. Apologies for absence were received from Alesdames K. O’Brien. J. AV. Greenslade, H. R. Barrett, J. AT. Bunt, IT. G. Carter, AV. Afeldrum, F. H. Denton, IT. C. Garde, and G A. Perry and J. Menzies (Hokitika delegates). The Mayor, in his opening address, wished the members well in their good work, he being particularly interested in the splendid spirit of co-operation in the Society, which was. looking after and building up the generation of people that would take the place of the present generation, which was one Of the most useful works that could be undertaken.
The meeting declined to accept the resignations of Mesdames F. 11. Denton and 11. C. Garde from the Society, and on the motion of Mesdames Dennehy and "Wilde, each was granted six months’ leave of absence. The Mayor Raid that the Society should be congratulated on the admin istration of its finance, and he hoped ( that many new members would link themselves with the work, as, if left to a few' it became a burden. The members of the Society worked hard and they did not secure any actual benefit. There should be a wider scope for the Society and that could be brought about if an intelligent interest and financial help was given by the general community. The election of officers resulted: — President, Mrs F. M. Dennehy; VicePresidents, Mesdames J. O’Brien, J. W. Greenslade, A. H. Wilde, H. G Carter; Executive, Mesdames F. M. Dennehy, J. O’Brien, A. Hannan. The annual report, as already published in the “ Argus,” was adopted. Miss Anderson raised the question of the advisability of having a subbranch of the Society at Kumara. Mrs Dennehy stated that there did not seem to be anybody in Kumara willing to undertake the work, but she suggested that Miss Anderson put the matter before the Committee as a recommendation, and Miss Anderson advised that she would take this course. Mrs Dennehy referred to the small number of members in the Society, and the difficulty in securing even the smallest subscriptions. Many mothers who were getting the nurses’ services were not prepared to give anything, and it was difficult to carry on without assistance. The meeting was concluded with a vote of thanks to the Mayor for pre- / siding.
