QUEST FOR LOAN
SOVIET FAILS IN ENGLAND. (Aus. & NZ. Cable Assn.) LONDON, October 2. The “Daily Express” says: Russia vainly approached the Bank of England for a loan of fifty million sterling, at three per cent., for a period of fifty years. When this proposal was ridiculed, a loan of twenty-five million at five per cent, for ten years, was proposed. This was also refused on the ground that the Soviet had not offered security.
The Soviet claims that Russia’s •gold production last year was valued at twenty million sterling, and it will be thirty million this year, but did nut offer this to the Bank of England. The loans arc required to repair the railway systems, which are in a bad condition, and also to meet the harvest deficiency, and provide war material.
