WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). Successful Card Party. WESTPORT, October 3. Despite inclement weather and a counter attraction of a similar charae ter, the card party held in the Labour Rooms last evening was given big public patronage. A dainty supper was provided by the Ladies’ Social Committee. The prize-winners -were: Mrs. R. Hansby, Messrs Lewis and McLaughlin. Cold Wet Days. For the past few days we are experiencing very wintry conditions in Westport. Heavy downpours of rain, some of which would not be misdescribed if termed cataracts, have been the order, 'flic rivers and creeks are all in high Hood and whitebaiting activities are considerably interrupted, and by the look of things this morning it is not contemplated that nets will be out for a while yet. The sun managed to break through the douds yesterday, and revealed the surrounding hills all covered in a mantle of snow. At the time of writing rain continues to .fall heavily, and if the sky is any indication there is no immediate probability of the conditions improving.

New Zealanders Meet in England. Under the heading “A Small World,” t-he “Wellesley News,” an .English publication, has the following.—“ Johnny Robertson, a member of .Jack Payne’s band, who is a New Zealander by birth, went for a swim to the New Brighton bathing pool on Tuesday. He was quite unaware that the pool was to be visited by champion Empire swimmers, but on the announcement being made by loudspeaker, he came out of the water eager to ‘hold out a hand’ to his compatriots. The first man he introduced himself to was Noel Crump, the free style swimming champion of New Zea land, who at once exclaimed, Robertson? Why I know your brother Char lie well.’ And it is so, for tin* bandsman's brother in New Zealand is an amateur swimmer of distinction and widely known. Both swimming champion and musical champion much enjoyed their meeting twelve thousand miles from home.’’

Johnny Robertson, above referred to, is a son of Mr and Mrs J. M. Robertson, Westport.

Gymnastic Display. The Gymnastic Display to be given in the Theatre Royal on Monday, October 15, by the members of the Westport Club, is attracting much interest, and an exceptionally large audience should be in evidence. The club members have been training for some time and have now reached a degree of efficiency which would compare more than favourably with any club of its kind in New Zealand. Over fifty will take part and every one are excellent performers, ’reams of ladies will be seen in barbell evercises and club swinging. Parallel bar work and tableaux building will also be features of a great evening’s enjoyment. The horizontal bar, marching, classical posing, etc., will also figure on the programme. A great supporting programme is in course of preparation, and the whole evening’s attraction should ensure a feast of entertainment. Dick Diskin, the greatest upside down artist in New Zealand, will also ap pear. He is just as happy on his hands as he is on his feet. The proceeds of the display will be devoted to the Holland Memorial Hall fund.,. Watch for further particulars.

Search for Mr Marshall’s Body. The search for the body of the late Mr Marshall was proceeded with yesterday and continued up to a late hour last evening, but without success. The creek is much swollen and the weather conditions generally are against the work of those taking part in the search. The collapsed bridge and four of the trucks are well down in the water. There is a possibility that the body may be held by this debris, but this cannot be determined until the rain ceases and the water in the stream clears. Shipping. The Canopus arrived from Lyttelton yesterday, and is due to sail to-day for Auckland. The Kini is also announced to sail to-day for Wellington. 'Phe Kanna, which has been held up outside, proceeded yesterday to New Plymouth, without making port.
