RAILWAY COLLISION

At Auckland A GUARD KILLED. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, October 2. A fatal collision between a passenger train and a rake of cattle trucks occurred at Newmarket railway station late to-night. The guard of the passenger train was killed instantly when his van telescoped with the first of the trucks. The guard was Allan Dunsmuir, a middle-aged man. married, of Dominion Road. There we no no passengers in the train, which was backing into the western side of the station, after a trip from Henderson. A rake of 21 trucks was about to be taken to Westfield, but the Henderson train arrived before the trucks had been moved. The impact was severe, and the. guard’s van of the passenger train smashed its way completely through the first truck and also damaged the second truck in the rake. The carriage immediately behind the van also was damaged. The guard’s van came to rest pract:crJly on top of the first truck. The stock in the first truck. which was smashed completely, scrambled out of the wreckage, mostly unhurt, though one or two beasts are likely to be destroyed. A crane and breakdown waggons began clearing away the wreckage shortly before midnight.
