On Austraian Goods GOODBYE TO OTTAWA? LONDON, August 16. In a letter replying to the Bolton District Grocers’ and Provision Dealers’ Associations’ resolution not to stock Australian produce, until cotton duties are withdrawn, Mr. Bruce pointed out that the value of the United Kingdom trade affected by the duties recently imposed was £350,000 per annum, which is less than seven per cent, of Australia’s import of cotton goods from Lancashire last year. MELBOURNE, August 16. Replying to English criticism of the Commonwealth Government’s imposition of increased duties on British cotton piece goods and related cotton yarn, the Minister of Customs (Mr. White) denied that Australia was not observing the Ottawa undertakings. He added that the Government here merely acted on the Tariff Board’s recommendations, while the cotton industry in the United Kingdom evidently failed to appreciate that the range of cotton goods whereon protection had been accorded to Australian industry represented a very small proportion of Australian requirements of cotton goods. British interests also lost sight of the fact that valuable primage concessions were granted in thc last budget to the British manufacturers
