ALL BLACKS
GOOD TIME AT BRISBANE. RIVALRY OF LEAGUE CODE. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received August 16 at 7.5 p.m.) BRISBANE, August 16. The All Blacks are thoroughly enjoying their stay in Brisebane. Following a civic reception by the Lord Mayor, the whole team attended the Queensland Rugby Union ball, and they proved exceedingly popular. The New Zealanders have quietly complained about the hard surface of the Exhibtion ground, and have requested that it be watered before Saturday, although there were no serious casualties as the result of yesterday’s match. The Rugby League code is the predominant one in Queensland, but its officials have paid the progress of the Rugby Union a nice compliment by putting on the inter-city championship against Saturday’s New Zealand attraction. This move has caused dissension in the League ranks.
COMMENTS ON ALL BLACKS. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) SYDNEY, August 16. Commenting on the Queensland match, the “Herald” says: By defeating Queensland 31/14, the New Zealanders clearly demonstrated the truth that they are being moulded into a strong attacking machine, and likely fully to extend their opponents in the two big games yet to be played. The “Telegraph” says: Rising to greatness often, and always dominant in the decisive second half, the AH Blacks crushed Queensland’s The New Zealanders’ margin of points might easily have been increased but a high wind was responsible for occasional errors in handling which stopped many promising movements. Considering the freedom of their play, the tourists’ showing was remarkably free from error, but more heartening to tho players themselves was the revelation of the finishing power so sadly lacking in the first Test. Of the New Zealand pack, Leeson and Hore were the best. Each was tireless in the light and played his part in the open as well. Leeson must now be seriously considered for New Zealand’s Test. Lilburne gave a fine display as fullback. He mixed the play and when he attacked he was one of the most elusive of the visiting hacks.
Kilby flies to Brisbane to-morrow, accompanied by Malcolm, who plavs with the Australian fifteen.
