HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, August 15. A very heavy nor’-yesterly gale lust night blew down several fences, and broke windows, while a. tree in Cass Square was broken off, bringing down an electric wire in Stafford Street. The wind was accompanied at intervals by very heavy rain showers. This morning the gale had dropped to some extent, but conditions were still boisterous, with showers. There was a very heavy sea, and there was a heavy flood in the river this morning. The West Coast ladies’ hockey team to take part in the forthcoming tournament in Christchurch has been completed by the Misses Collett. (2). A wedding of interest was celebrated on Wednesday, when Olive, daughter of Mr William Barrowman, of Salo Street, was married to Russell Sharpen, of Christchurch, the Rev. G. A. Naylor officiating. The bride, who entered the church on the arm of her father, was charmingly attired in an exquisite gown of cream crepe satin which was much admired. Her veil crowned by orange blossoms, was beautifully embroidered. She carried a sheath of white lilies. The bride wa< attended by Miss Miriam Sharplin, sister of the bridegroom, and looked charming in a frock of green floral silk, trimmed with many frills of green georgette. Iler bouquet of autumn tinted flowers toned nicely with the spray worn in her hair. The duties of groomsman were ably carried out by Mr Vincent Chapman, of Ross. The church was prettily decorated by Mrs Parkhill, and other friends of the bride, and the organ was played by Miss Elsie Robinson. After the ceremony the guests assembled at the home of the bride’s parents, where a dainty afternoon tea awaited them, the usual toasts being honoured. The happy couple left later in the afternoon en route for Christchurch, where the honeymoon is to be spent. The bride’s travelling frock was of brown and fawn, with brown fur-trimmed coat, and hat to tone. Many expressions of good wishes in the form of presents, cheques and telegrams were received. The firebell rang out an alarm last night at 11.20 o’clock, the scene of the outbreak being the laundry at the rear of the Red Lion Hotel. The outbreak was subdued without the services of the Brigade being required. The Westland Rugby Sub-Union has decided to accept the challenge of the Southern Division for a return match on August 25. providing the representative fixture between West Coast and Nelson is not being played here on that date. A one-round competition among senior teams for the Eord Cup will be inaugurated by the Sub-Union i next Saturday, when Ross will play Kiwi at Ross (Mr J. The competition, “best article from a flour bag,’’ was won by Mrs Madson, Mrs Havill and Mrs Cropper being second and third. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Michel arid Jones, and Misses Michel and Jones.
