The overturning of a sledge in the flooded Kapuni River in South Taranaki, reisailted in the drowning of Gordon Prestidge, aged 15. Heroic, but unavailing efforts at rescue wore made by his brother Leonard, aged 22. The boy was swept downstaire&m and the body was recovered half a mile away.
