SOUTHLAND v. CANTERBURY. INVERCARGILL, August 15. Southland defeated the Canterbury touring Rugby team to-day by 20 points to 12, in a game which was remarkable in that no fewer than four field goals were kicked, three being registered by Southland. Conditions were ideal, but the standard of play was disappointing. For Southland, Metcalfe scored a try, which was eonverted by McKay. Henderson, J. Purdue and Hamilton potted goals, and G. Purdue kicked a penalty goal. For Canterbury tries were scored by Henry and McPhail, Deavoll converting one and Mortlock potted a goal. NEWMAN SHIELD. WON BY • GREYMOUTH TECH. The final of the Newman Shield secondary school competition was played at the Technical School grounds yesterday afternoon, between the Greymouth Technical team and the Reefton combined secondary school fifteen. The ground was in a heavy state, which militated against back play. The game, however, was a fast, willing forward one, and after leading by six points to nil, Technical ran out winners by six points to five. Technical were much the heavier side, but the speedy forwards of the Reefton side kept them busy. Scorers for Technical were Lowe and Hector; whilst T. Floyd scored for Reefton, and W. Andrews converted. Mr N. Eggleton was referee.
