BYRD’S WEAKNESS
From Fume Poisoning TOO SICK TO TRAVEL. (Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Aeeeived August 15 at 9 p.m.) MONTREAL, August 14. A message from Little 2\.merica says Admiral Byrd is resting comfortably, according to messages from Mr Poulter. However, he is too weak immediately to start on the return journey. The entire party will remain at the Bolling Base for an indefinite time. Poulter has confirmed a suspicion that Byrd has become so badly weakened as the result of kerosene fumes poisoning during June that he was unable to properly take care of himself, and he spent at least half his time in his sleeping bag. Poulter states that Byrd was too proud to call for help or to expose the men to the risk of a winter journey on his behalf, even in direct extremity. Byrd held that his personal code of honour was the code of his profession.
