WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Labour Day carnival. WESTPORT, August 14. The combined sports bodies held a meeting in the Labour Rooms last evening in connection with the big carnival to be held on October 23, the provisions of which will be devoted to the funds of the Holland Memorial Hall. After routine matters were attended to the meeting adjourned at the request, of the Mayor till to-mor-row evening, when at the conclusion of the Borough Council meeting at The Town Hall, arrangements will again be discussed in connection with several features of the day’s programme. Local business people have been approached and all promise to give the project their hearty co-operation.

Buller Rugby Union. Mr F. Keating was in the chair at the weekly meeting of the Buller Rugby Union, held last evening. The following decisions were arrived at: — That Old Boys thirds he granTed permission to play a friendly match with United (Grey) on Victoria Square on August 25; that Old Boys thirds be granted permission to play a friendly match at Greymouth on September 7: that T. Worthington be added to the Westport junior list; that the explanation from Ranger junior re his conduct in the Ranger v. Stockton fixture on 28/7/34 be received as satisfactory, and that his suspension of one playing Saturday be considered sufficient penalty; that Marlborough Union be asked to alter Buller challenge for the Seddon shield from September 29 to September 22; that Secretary’s action in forwarding telegram of congratulations to Marlborough Union on their Seddon Shield victory be endorsed; that Old Boys juniors be granted permission to play a friendly match with Excelsior on Victoria Square, on August 22; that a Possible and Probable rep. match be played at Granity on August 26, Granity securing this match on the voting from Waimangaroa: that the selectors be instructed to select Possible and Probable teams after next Saturday’s matches; that Secretary interview Railway Department with a view to running a special train to-Granity on August 26 Saturday’s Fixtures.

Buller Valley Dairy Company. Mr D. Archer was in the chair at the annual meeting of the Buller Valley Dairy Co. There was a fair attendance of members. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. Messrs D. J. D. Archer, B. Duncan, W. H. Martin, junr., James Morris, G. G. Mackay and R. Stephen were nominated for the three vacancies on the Directorate. Mr C. D. Harney de dined re-nominaiton for the office of director. Messrs R. Beck, A. G. Dou'thett and C. J. Bruning were appointed scrutineers in connection with the election of the directors by postal ballot, the closing of the poll being fixed for 1 p.m. on the 25th inst. Mr F. Clark was re-appointed auditor. A hearty vote of appreciation of the services to the Company of Mr Harney was moved by Mr Archer and carried by acclamation.

Six-a-Side Hockey. The results of a six-a-side hockey tournament played at Granity were as follows:—■

Denniston B defeated Ngakawau B, 1—0; Denniston A defeated Rangers B, 1—0; Rangers A defeated Mokihinui B, I—o (extra time played); Rovers A defeated Mokihinui A, 1—0; Rovers B defeated Ngakawau A, 2—l (extra time played). Semi-finals; Denniston A defeated Denniston B, 2 —o; Rangers A defeated Rovers A, I—o. Final; Denniston defeated Rangers I—o. The final developed into a very strenuous contest, and close on an hour elapsed before Miss Prentice for Denniston notched the winning goal. The men’s section was won by Wesley (Westport). Four teams competed. Cricket. Although a bit early, interest in cricket is being shown in the country. A number of enthusiasts held a meeting at Ngakawau, over which Mr Ogg presided. It was agreed during the coming season to put two teams on the field and ways and means of raising finance for the purchase of equipment were gone into. Subscriptions were fixed at 2s 6d for senior, and Is for junior players. A Trivial Offence. Referred to by the Justice of the Peace (Mr Kilkenny) and Sergeant Mclntyre as not a very serious matter, a young man was fined 5s in the Police Court yesterday on charges arising out of the riding of a bicycle in Palmerston Street on last. Shipping. The Parera arrived in port yester-

day. Through a failure to secure a crew at Wellington, the arrival of the Kini here is delayed. The Titoki is due to-day, and will sail for Greymouth. The Alexander is due from Greymouth on Thursday. The Huia left Wellington last night for this port.
