SOLICITOR’S ACTION Poor Woman’s Savings SPECULATED AWAY. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August 14Found guilty on the re-trial of the theft of £650 from Samuel Wilson, a sentence of twelve months’ hard labour was imposed, at the Supreme Court, by Mr Justice Ostler on William Perry Ilollings, a former solicitor. WELLINGTON, August 14. Addressing Hol lings. M n Justice Ostler sad: “Your conduct was criminal. You took the savings of » poor ‘woman, and you used her £4”O in your own speculations. You were systematically using your clients’ monies, and were systematically making false entries in your books, believe that you intended to repay it all; but something like £2O<M) i short in your trust account. Probation seems out of the question. J shall make your sentence as light as I can, but 1 cannot possibly let lh public think that such conduct in a solicitor can be passed.” Referring to the amount of £650 in the charge. Mr Justice Ostler said that he agreed with the jury tl Ilollings had no intention of stealing. It was his intention to have th‘ use of it, but the result was the £650 loss. Owing to the existence of the Indemnity Fund, Wilson might not bo the loser. Ilollings had deceived Wi - son from the start, and had kept hi n deceived foto years.
