AUSTRIAN NAZI RISING
MANY POLICE IMPLICATED. FOUR EXECUTED VIENNA. August 13. In a court guarded by troop's, armed with machine guns and fixed bayonets, Ludwig Maitzen, Erich Wohirab, Franz Leeb and Josef Hackl, four policemen wer e sentenced to death for participation in the seizur e of the Chancellery, to be executed within three hours, unless the President acceded to a request for clemency. Emil Schrott, Police Inspector, and another constable, were sentenced for life, two others to twenty years’ and one to fifteen years’ penal servitude. The trial lasted six days. The defence pleaded that the accused were unaware of participation in the revolt.
Two hundred and sixty police were arrested following the discovery of a list of members of the Nazi Party duiinc the search of a policeman’s house. LATER. Four policemen were executed. LONDON, August 14. Th e “News-Chronicle’s” Vienna correspondent says: The execution of tlio policemen shocked Vienna, as all declared they believed they were pro terting the new government, but they admitted their being secretly Nazis.
