CREWS SECURED
BY KINI AND OMANA. WELLINGTON, August 14. A. crew has been engaged for the Kini, and she- leaves to-day for Westport. A crew has also been engaged for the Omana. which has been recommissioned af'er three years in the and she also leaves to-day for West port. SEAMEN’S STAND. BY THEIR CAPTAIN.
It transpires that when the steamer “John” recently reached Auckland, after her crew had obtained at Greymouth the restoration of their wages cut, the Master of the vessel received notice of dismissal from the directors. The crew state that several of the John’s complement are shareholders in the Western Company owning the vessel, including the master* and it was with their endorsement, that the master agreed here on the last trip to the restoration of the cut. The directors considered they should have been invited to decide, whereas the decision, it is stated, represented a majority of the company’s capitalisation; but the directors gave notice to the master. When the crew questioned the directorate and found this out, they at once made it clear that a new master would entail the finding of a now crew also. The directors then climbed down, and withdrew their notice, so that the “John” still continues to earn good returns for all concerned.
