Semi-final; Miki and Miss Round defeated Lester and Miss Ingram 6/3, The Crawford v. Quist singles was not taken seriously. Crawford obtained useful practice. He was particularly sound on the backhand, but served many doubles. He finished full of vitality. Kirby played finely against Perry, justifying victory over McGrath, but he was unable |o stand up Io Perrv’s strong driving. The ‘‘Daily Mail’’ expresses the opinion that it is hard to conceive anybody beating Perry, who is the best player the world has seen. PARIS. May 4. Sporting newspapers, discussing the Davis Cup, generally express the opinion that France will not survive th n winner of Australia-Japan tie. The loss df Satoh, and the mastery of Crawford will weigh the scales in Australia’s favour against America and Japan. The Cup has always gone to the country with the best singles pair, am] Perry and Austin fulfil this need. France’s Davis Cup team against Australia on May IS, will be: Borotra. Boussus. Brugnon and Merlin. It is expected that Boussus and Merlin will play in the singles, and Borotra and Brugnon in the doubles.
