NATIONAL MAGAZINE

THE RAILWAYS MONTHLY. Steadily, month by mouth, increasing numbers of New Zealanders are recognising gladly that the “N.Z. Railways Magazine” far from being a cold and formal “house organ”, is distinctly a national paper, which helps importantly to give the Dominion’s people a good knowledge of their country, past ami present. In the big range of pictures and literary features, the May issue well maintains the high standard that was set when the Magazine was reorganised as a national publication a. year ago. Tn “Meet Master Alan,” Mr. Ken Alexander, with his delightful drollery and drawings, philosophises merrily and cleverly on human nature in the individual and in the mass. Continuing his series of “Famous New Zealanders,” Mr. Janies Cowan gives a very bright chronicle of Alfred Domett, the remarkable literary statesman, whose many-sided personality, made a deep impression on New Zealand long ago. Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell describes the trial of Louis Chernis. one of the most dramatic cases that ever came before a Court in this country. The well-known New Zealand novelist, Isabel M. Peacocke, in “Speed,” tells a true and thrilling story of the New Zealand Railways. There are further good instalments of “Wisdom of the Maori,’’ “Pictures of New Zealand Life,”, original verse notes on books and writers and an excellent “Women’s Section,” which includes a delightful sketch of “Mother and Daughter,” from the modern viewpoint.
