ASSAULT CHARGE
AGAINST POLICE INSPECTOR. LYTTELTON ELECTION CASE. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 23. When a charge of assault against Alan Cameron, police inspector, of Christchurch, arising from an incident in the Lyttelton by-election, was called in the Magistrate’s 'Court to-day, Mr Archer, for the informant, applied for leave to withdraw the charge. The •application was granted by Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M. The charge against the Inspector was that on September 13, at Redcliffs, he assaulted George Thurston Koller. Mr Archer said that a bar had arisen which debarred them from going on with the charge. It was found that the Court had no ln cases of alleged assault, there is a statutory limitation of three months for the laying of an information. Mr Brown, for Inspector Cameron, said that the matter arose from an incident in the recent by-election. It had been referred to in Parliament and had had a good deal- of publicity. The police and Inspector Cameron had nothing whatever to fear from a prosecution of that nature, and did not rely on a technical point in getting the case struck out. There was a perfect defence. If it had been possible to do so. they were prepared to waive th* technical point. The Magistrate: You couldn’t do that. The case was struck out, with costs against informant and solicitor’s fee £2 2s.
