GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S APPEAL
WINTER RELIEF Plea for More Support (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, June 7. A renewed appeal on behalf of the Governoi-Gencral's winter relief fund, which >\as inaugurated after consulting with the Government and chief municipalities two months ago, was made by Lord Bledisloe at the opening -of the city mission. “The object of our a] peal for this fund.” said Lord Bledisloe, ‘‘was to enable gifts in kind as well as in money to be made during the winter to meet cases of exceptional, distress and to be administered impartially and with careful discrimination bv a ( small business committee in \\ oiling ton which could not possibly be suspected of any partisanship, political, sectional. or geographical. Difficulties and delays have unfortunately arisen in connection with the appoint mvnt of the committee, and conscquen" Iv the allocation of relief from this und has been unduly postponed. However, two days ago the committee was appointed and. the work of discriminating in the allocation will now proceed without further delay. ‘‘Generally speaking.” added Lord Bledisloe, ‘‘in all areas of great need, such as this Auckland area is, money or goods which are forthcoming from the area will be allocated to cases ol exceptional distress within the area. In these circumstances I want to make an earnest appeal on behalf of her Excellency and myself to all those who are inclined to support our winter relief fund, not to defer unduly their contributions but On tile clear un“ derstanding that they do not abate by one iota their support to this mission or any other existing relief organisa* tion which needs just now every penny which generous, kindhearted people can give them.” AUCKLAND DEPUTATION. AUCKLAND, June 8. The Chamber of Commerce* Council, on the casting vote of the Chairman, to-day. rejected a motion that the Council, without questioning the sincerity of those associated with this week’s deputation to Mr .Coates, dissociate itself as a body from the financial proposals submitted. until an opportunity is given for the fullest consideration. Thu President (Air H Turner) said the Chamber was not involved. He had declined an invitation because ho knew what the proposals were. The Chairman of the Transport Board (Mr Allum), who was one of the deputation, said its sole aim was to try to help. If the Chamber did not want to support the deputation, it should at least not put grit in the wheels Another member of the deputation said he did not know the nature of the proposals which were such that he could not support th p m. The nature, of the- scheme was a surprise* to a great many people. LAKE ELLESMERE DRAINAGE. CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. A proposal to expend £82,000 in providing permanent drainage for Lake Ellesmere was approved by the executive of the Canterbury Progress League.
